Chapter 13: A Wall
"Tell me now," Linus said, "or I get out at the next light."
The car was doing sixty on the Jones Falls Expressway with the partition up and Manolis driving one-handed, a bloody handkerchief pressed to his eyebrow.
Leandros sat beside him with his hands open on his knees.
He had not touched the beads since the dining room.
"At three in the morning, the night we met," he said, "you walked into the corridor behind the Anchor Room."
"I don't remember it."
"I know. You were looking for a bathroom. You found a glass door instead, and behind it my uncle was giving your friend a briefcase full of cash."
Linus stared at him.
"Griffin took money from Aristides."
"Forty thousand dollars at that desk. More in the weeks before. Harbor Sound is how my uncle washes what the Family earns, and Griffin is how he makes the label look real. A hit, a name, a face on a billboard," Leandros said.
"My song."
"Your song. That's why they needed it to be a hit."
The streetlights went over Linus's face in long bars.
"I filmed it."
"Forty seconds. You sang while you did it."
Linus laughed.
It was a dreadful sound, and he put his hand over his mouth.
"Aristides saw the phone," Leandros said. "His men came down the corridor after you. I came around the other corner at the same time. I knew what they were going to do."
"What?"
"The Family does not touch what a Kallis has claimed. Not in front of witnesses. It's the oldest rule we have, and it's the only wall I had." His voice was very quiet. "I stepped between you and them. I said, 'He's mine.' Then I took you upstairs."
