Chapter 14: The Table Votes

"Show me Quincy first," Linus said.

He stood in the middle of the back room of the Highlandtown social club at eleven o'clock on Monday night, under the photograph of the ship.

Five old men sat at the long table in dark suits.

Aristides sat in the sixth chair, at their right hand, with his cardigan and his rings.

The man with the scar on his hand stood behind him with his hands folded.

Manolis stood behind Linus, and Leandros at his side, and neither of them had spoken since they came through the door.

"The boy is unharmed," Aristides said. "I assure you."

"Show me."

The oldest of the five, a thin man with a hearing aid and a cane, lifted two fingers.

A door at the back of the room opened.

Two men came up the cellar stairs with Quincy between them.

He wore a torn Ravens hoodie and had a swollen eye and a split lip.

He had no glasses, and he squinted across the room.

"Linus?" he said. "Is that you? I can't see a damn thing."

"It's me, Q."

"Good. Tell this man I want a lawyer. And tell him if he touches my hair again I'm going to bite him."

Someone at the table coughed to hide a laugh.

Linus shuddered, his shoulders sinking.

"Are you hurt?"

"I'm furious, mostly. They took my phone and they wouldn't let me pee." Quincy lifted his chin. "Is the gorilla okay? He was bleeding."

"I'm fine," Manolis said, behind Linus.
