Chapter 8: Forty Seconds

Leandros had his trousers buttoned and a shirt over his shoulders before the elevator doors opened.

He left Linus in the bedroom with the door shut and the lamp off.

"Stay here," he said, and kissed his forehead. "Whatever you hear."

"Who is it?"

"My uncle."

Linus sat up in the dark, with the beads still around his wrist.

"Is he the one who wants my phone?"

Leandros stood in the doorway for a moment.

He did not lie to Linus often, and he hated how easily it came.

"I don't know yet," he said.

Aristides stood in the living room with a white pastry box in both hands.

He smiled when Leandros came in.

"Forgive the hour," he said. "I was passing. I brought baklava from the place on Eastern. Your father loved it."

"My father loved a lot of things."

"He did." The old man set the box on the glass table and looked around the room, at the broken glass swept into a dustpan beside the speaker, at the open bottle of wine. "Your guest is well?"

"Asleep."

"Good. He is thin, but he has spirit." Aristides sat, without being asked, and folded his hands. "Leandro. I will be brief, because you have been working hard."

Leandros stayed on his feet.

"Griffin tells me the boy went into the Anchor Room the night of the party. Near the offices. Perhaps the corridor, perhaps further. He says the boy had his phone out," Aristides said.
