Chapter 4: The Clip

On Monday morning I walked onto the pediatric ward with Conway's wedding ring on my hand.

It was a plain steel band he had gone and bought at a hardware store at seven a.m., and he had apologized for it.

I told him I preferred it to the paper one, and he looked wounded, so I said I would wear both.

The paper one was in my scrubs pocket.

The ward was quiet when I came in.

The kind of quiet where six people stop talking at once.

Our nurse manager was standing at the station with her arms folded and her phone in her hand.

"Annalise," she said. "My office."

I went.

She shut the door and turned her phone around.

The clip was on the screen, the one of me sobbing in the veil.

It had two hundred thousand views now.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I have to ask. Is this you?"

"It's me," I said. "The crying isn't mine. The audio isn't mine."

"The board chair called me at seven."

My stomach dropped.

"Mrs. Harcourt," she said, "was very gentle about it. She said you were having an episode, and she was concerned about patients."

"An episode."

"She suggested a leave of absence."

I stood there with my hand on the doorframe.

Eleanor had been kind to me for two years.

She had sent me cards when my mother died.

I could not make the two things fit.

"Give me one hour," I said. "Please."

I went out into the hallway and found Hattie coming off the elevator with her phone already out.

"I was going to tell you at the wedding," she said, "but then the wedding happened."

"Tell me what?"

"I never liked Reese. So when I left to get your water, I came back and stood outside the back room door." She held up the phone. "I filmed the whole thing."
