Chapter 5: The Club Lunch

I did not go down to the car.

I texted Eleanor instead: "Not in a car. The Marlow Club, one o'clock, in the main dining room."

She answered in under a minute.

"Of course, dear."

At one o'clock I walked into the Marlow Club in my scrubs with Hattie behind me.

Conway had offered to come.

I had told him no, then told him to wait in the truck outside, and he had waited there with the engine off and his eyes on the door.

The main dining room was full.

White tablecloths, a pianist, forty tables of the people who had sat in the pews on Saturday.

Every head turned.

Eleanor sat at the best table by the window, in pearls, with a pot of tea and a folder beside her plate.

She rose when I came to the table and kissed my cheek.

"Annalise," she said. "Thank you for coming. Sit."

I sat.

Hattie took the chair beside me and picked up a bread roll.

"I didn't invite her," Eleanor said pleasantly.

"She's my witness."

"Then she can have a roll."

A waiter poured tea.

Eleanor laid her hands on the folder.

"First, I want to say how sorry I am," she said, and her voice was warm. "My son behaved terribly. I raised him better than that, and I'm ashamed."

"Thank you."

"He has been punished. He has not slept since Saturday."

"I'm sure."

"Now." She opened the folder. "Let's be sensible. You're a young woman who had a terrible shock and made a very quick decision. I think we can let everyone say it was a misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding."

"The marriage can be set aside. A man like that will not fight it."

"A man like Conway."

"A man who works with his hands." She tilted her head. "I'm told he has a nice little yard."
