Chapter 22: The Loosening

Marlis's POV

I had always thought the hum was a note, but it was only the first half of a word.

I laid both palms against the seam in the Stone.

It was warm, and it was waiting.

I felt every cord in the valley run into it, thin and bright and many.

I felt the two thousand at the edge of the meadow, and the garrison at Marrowfell, and the Collars on the hill.

I felt the Stone at the fort, and the Stone at Kingshold, and every daughter stone in the kingdom, and each of them leaned toward this one.

My father stood behind me with his hand on my shoulder.

Garreth stood between me and the field.

"Whatever happens," I said, "don't let go of me."

"I won't."

I took a breath.

"Loose," I said, "and be your own."

The Stone rang.

It rang, a sound that came up through my feet and out of my mouth, and silver light poured out of my hands.

It ran across the meadow in a wave.

I watched it go.

It touched the first rank, and I saw the cords there flare and part, one after another, a thousand small sparks, then two thousand.
