Chapter 23: The King's Question
We buried the baker's brother beside the Keeper Stone, with his shield on his chest.
The farmers dug the grave themselves.
Sergeant Tolley stood at the head of it in her torn coat, and she said nothing for a long time.
Then she said, "He kept it up," and walked away across the grass.
Wick followed her with his crutch and did not say a single funny thing.
The King held his court in the meadow that afternoon, in a camp chair, with a blanket over his knees.
Two thousand wolves sat on the hillside in the sun.
Nobody had ordered them to.
They had simply stopped and found nothing to do.
Many of them had gone to the Greyfen women at the pack hall and asked for bread.
I stood in front of the chair with the pack horn at my belt.
Garreth stood a pace behind me.
My father sat on a hay bale at the side with his hammer in his lap.
Lord Marshal Skell knelt in the grass at the King's feet in irons.
He had not spoken since the confession.
The King looked at me for a long time.
"You have broken my Oath Stones," he said.
"Yes, my lord," I said.
"Every one."
"All of them cracked. I felt them go," I said.
