Chapter 24: The Muster
By spring, the cracked Oath Stone at Fort Marrowfell had become a place where people ate their lunch.
They sat on it in the thin sunshine with their boots dangling, and nobody thought anything of it.
I stood in the Yard that morning with my mother's hammer in my hand.
The frost was gone from the drill ground.
The river ran high and brown under the east wall, and the Fenmark bank was quiet.
Behind me, in the Oath Hall's old doorway, the sun fell across a pillar split from top to bottom.
I walked up to it and struck it once with the hammer.
It rang.
It was a clear, sweet note that went out across the fort and the village and the river, and it did not pull at anyone.
It only called.
They came.
They came through the gate in twos and threes, and then in dozens.
They were wolves from Marrowfell and Greyfen and the hill farms and the river towns, men and women and a few too young to shave.
