Chapter 5: Clarence's Crossword

"Library books," I said. "And a lot of bad drawings."

Harvey kept looking at me.

"It's strange," he said. "The fur is done exactly like"

"Harvey," Daphne said, laughing lightly. "You're making her uncomfortable."

He blinked, and whatever was in his face closed.

"Sorry," he said, and set the frame down against the wall.

I never saw him look at it again that night.

I did notice that he never put it in my arms either.

In the car afterward, he held my hand the whole way, and his thumb kept moving over my knuckles.

I told him I had a headache.

I slept at my own place.

Maddie was waiting on my couch in her pajamas with a bag of frozen peas.

"For your face," she said. "You've been smiling since eight o'clock. It must hurt."

I sat down and let her put the peas on my cheek.

"She gave me my own drawing," I said. "And he knew it. I mean, he knew something."

"He knows the fox. Everybody knows the fox, it was in a catalogue." Maddie scowled at the ceiling. "You need proof, Cassia. Not a recording of him being a jerk. Proof that the drawing is yours."

"I have the sketches."

"Where?"

I stopped.

My old sketchbooks had been in a box in the back of a closet in my mother's house in Joliet.

I had gone through that box two years ago looking for a recipe.
