Chapter 6: Roof

"What's in the locked room?" I asked.

We were in his bedroom, and I was standing in front of the bookcase with a glass of wine.

Harvey stopped with one cufflink undone.

"Who told you about that?"

"Nobody. I'm engaged to you. I notice doors."

He crossed the room in three steps and took the wine from my hand and set it on the shelf.

"It's a study," he said. "I keep something in there I'm not ready to share."

"What?"

"After the wedding."

He said it so gently that I nearly believed it.

Then he took my hand.

"Come up to the roof with me."

The roof of his building had a glass-walled terrace and a view of the whole lake.

It was a warm May night, and the city looked like someone had spilled a jewelry box.

Harvey stood at the glass with his back to me.

"Cassia," he said. "There's something I have to tell you."

My pulse jumped.

I knew exactly what it was.

He was going to tell me about the bet.

He was going to confess, two weeks before the wedding, to a woman who had already heard every word of it, and he was going to look sorry while he did it.

And then he would be a man who had told the truth, and I would be a woman who had been told.
