Chapter 5: The Drive
Gavin did not wait two days.
He knocked on my door at seven the next morning, with a paper cup in each hand and the frame shop's bell still ringing downstairs.
"You told me no," I said through the crack.
"You told me I had two days," he said. "I've used one. Get your coat."
"I said no appointment."
"You said you'd listen to one."
I had said nothing of the kind, and he knew it.
He stood in my hallway in a plain gray sweater, his hair still damp, looking exactly as stubborn as the day I had married him.
"Mercy General opens its doors at eight," he said. "The man I know has cleared forty minutes for you. If he says it's the same, I'll drive you home and never ask again."
"You'll keep that promise?"
"I've never broken one to you."
That was true, and it was the problem.
I took my coat.
His car smelled of coffee and the pine soap he used on his hands.
I had spent three years sitting in the passenger seat of this car, looking out the window while he talked to his phone.
Today he turned the radio off.
We drove in silence for six blocks.
"You didn't eat," he said, without looking at me.
"How do you know?"
"There's nothing in your room but paint."
"You looked?"
"I looked at everything when I was in the doorway," Gavin said. "I wanted to see how you lived."
I turned to the window.
The city moved past in wet gray streaks.
At a red light he took the lid off my coffee and set it in the cup holder, closer to me.
