I Gave It All Back to My Sister, Even My Husband novel · Chapter 6 of 24

Chapter 6: The Floor

I got out of the car.

I had watched my sister's performance through an open door, and I had nothing left to say to it.

I walked to the end of the drive and called a taxi.

Gavin caught me at the gate twenty minutes later.

His shirt had a wet patch on the shoulder where Willa had cried into it.

"She's fine," he said. "Her pulse was ninety, and the nurse sat with her. She's asleep."

"Good."

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Don't be," I said. "Just drive."

He drove.

Neither of us mentioned the sofa, or the teacup, or the laugh.

I think we both knew the other had seen it, and neither of us was ready.

Mercy General had a lobby with a fountain and a man who played piano near the coffee kiosk.

The doctor Gavin knew was a short, brisk woman with silver in her hair and no patience for being polite.

She put my scans on her wall and stared at them for four full minutes.

"Who read these?" she asked.

"A man at a clinic on the east side."

"What did he tell you?"

"Pancreatic cancer. Inoperable. Under three months."

She made a small noise in her throat.

"I'm going to order a biopsy and a different scan. But I'll tell you what I see." She tapped the screen. "This is not what he called it."

My heart gave one hard beat.

"The edges are too clean," she said. "The growth pattern is wrong for the common kind. I think this is a neuroendocrine tumor."

"What does that mean?" Gavin asked, before I could.

"It means they grow slowly, and they respond to surgery." She turned to me. "If I'm right, Ms. Rowe, it can come out. I'd want it out within three weeks."

I had not breathed since she began to speak.
