Chapter 7: Gunnar's POV
Gunnar's POV
Britt stood in my bedroom doorway in one of my flannel shirts, and for a moment I forgot how to speak.
I had stripped the bed that afternoon.
I had put on new sheets, white cotton, and carried the old pillows out to the garage and shut the door on them.
I had not slept in that room since the morning of the accident.
The lamp was on low.
She looked at the bed, and then at me, and her gray eyes were very steady.
"New sheets," she said.
"Yes," I said.
"You didn't have to."
"I wanted to," I said, and it was true.
She crossed the room barefoot and stopped in front of me.
She had to tilt her head back only a little, because she is tall, and I liked that more than I could say.
I put my hands on her shoulders and felt the warmth of her through the flannel.
"Tell me what you want," Britt said.
I thought about it honestly, for the first time in years.
"I want to hold you," I said.
"I want to hold you from behind until the sun comes up."
"That's a start," she said.
She unbuttoned the shirt herself, from the top.
She let it slide down her arms and fall on the floor, and she stood naked in front of me in the lamplight.
I had only ever seen her in the dark.
I had not really seen her.
Her shoulders were broad and freckled, and her breasts were small and high, with dark pink nipples drawn tight in the cool air.
Her waist curved in and her hips flared, and between her thighs the hair was a darker brown-gold.
"Gunnar," she said.
"You're staring."
"I'm not done," I said.
She laughed, low, and pulled my sweater over my head.
I took off my own belt and jeans, and my hands were unsteady, and she waited and did not rush me.
She pulled back the covers and lay down on her side, with her back to me, and looked over her shoulder.
