Chapter 8: Minus Twenty-Two
Britt's POV
It was twenty-two below zero on the Stone Arch Bridge, and I had four coats on.
Gunnar's was the first.
It came down to my knees and smelled of cedar.
Leif had put his on over it, then Dale.
Nils had zipped the last one up to my chin himself, and laughed at how little of my face was left.
The polar vortex had been sitting on Minneapolis for a week.
The Mississippi steamed below us in the dark, and every light on the far shore had a halo.
"This is insane," Leif said.
His voice came out of three layers of scarf.
"Nobody walks the Stone Arch in this. The Vikings would have gone inside."
"The Vikings had fur," Nils said.
"I have a university education and a nylon jacket."
We had come from the tavern after the Friday draw.
I had said I wanted to see the river.
