Chapter 10: The Open Door
Kit woke alone in the iron bed with the blanket tucked around him.
Someone had washed the mess from his skin in the night, and that someone was not Dorrie.
Light came through the barred window in grey stripes.
The door stood open.
He lay still and stared at it.
It was open all the way back against the wall, and the hall beyond it was empty.
On the desk lay a single brass key.
Kit got up, naked, and crossed the cold floor to the desk, and picked up the key.
There was a note under it, in a hard black scrawl.
"The door is yours. So is the key. E."
Kit read it three times.
Then he put on his jeans and the shirt Dorrie had left folded on the chair, and walked out into the hall.
No one stopped him.
Two of Garth's men stood at the top of the stairs with their backs to him.
They looked out over the banister, and they did not turn.
He went down one floor, and then another.
At the bottom he stood in the great front hall with the daylight pouring in through the tall doors.
Snow lay white and bright across the yard.
