Ewan did not tell him to stay upstairs.
He dressed in the dark, handed Kit a clean shirt, and said, "Walk beside me. Not behind."
"Is that an order?"
"It's what I want."
They went down together.
The great hall was full.
All six councillors stood in front of the fireplace, with a dozen wolves from the outer packs behind them in coats still wet with snow.
Merritt Lund waited at the front, in his charcoal suit, with a rolled paper in his hand.
"Majesty," he said gently. "Forgive the hour."
"You've called the Moon Table early."
"I have called the council. It is the council's right, when the law is in danger."
"What law?"
Merritt unrolled the paper.
"The first law of the Crown," he said. "A king may not take as his own the one who killed the king before him."
Murmurs ran down the room.
"It is older than your family, Majesty. And it is said that you have been seen with the prisoner."
