Chapter 12: First Knot

The healer's cabin sat in a fold of the hills, half an hour from the lodge.

Ewan took Kit with him without being asked.

"You knew him," Kit said in the truck.

"Everyone knew him. He delivered me."

The door hung open.

Inside, an old man lay on the floor in a dark stain, with his throat torn and his eyes wide.

Ewan knelt and closed them.

His jaw worked.

"Fresh," Kit said, from the doorway. "Yesterday evening. Whoever did it was a wolf, and strong."

"I know."

"And they wanted you to know it."

Ewan stood and looked around the room.

Shelves of jars and herbs lined every wall.

A bottle of dark glass stood alone on the table, with its cork out.

Kit smelled it from where he stood.

Bitter leaf.

He went still.

Ewan picked the bottle up and sniffed it, and a line appeared between his brows.

"Do you know it?"

Kit did not answer.

He put his hand in his pocket and took out the folded brown scrap from the pillow.
