"Under investigation," I repeated. "Over."

"He knew it when he walked in," Gwen said. "His lawyer told him not to go. He went anyway. Over."

I didn't know what to say.

So I said, "Thank you for telling me. Over."

"Thea. Are you okay? You sound weird. Over."

I looked at Boone by the door.

He was looking at the floor.

"I'm fine," I said. "It's just cold. Over."

"It's always cold there. That's not an answer. Over."

The fire alarm went off at three in the morning eleven days later.

It wasn't the gentle drill tone.

It was the real one, a whooping scream in every hallway of the station.

FIRE. POWER PLANT. FIRE. POWER PLANT.

At the South Pole in the dark, the power plant is the only thing between forty-one people and minus ninety.

I was out of the ward bed and into my boots before I was awake.

The fire team was already suited up at the power plant door.

Black smoke rolled along the ceiling.

Through it I could see orange light jumping against the wall behind the number two generator.

A fuel line had split.
