Chapter 21: Sunrise
I read the underlined line three times.
"Did you?" I said. "Destroy it?"
He shook his head.
"It's in my duffel. Under my socks." He almost laughed. "I've been carrying it around for two months like a bomb."
He took the safe key out of the same robe pocket and set it on the table between us.
"And that's yours," he said.
I didn't pick it up yet.
"Why?"
He turned the cold mug around in his hands.
"I took this contract because it paid triple. I've got two kids in college and an ex-wife who's not wrong about me." He looked up. "I'm not a hero. I'm not going to be one. But I watched you put tape on that woman's leg instead of my drug. And tonight I watched a man walk into a fire, and I reached for a jar."
"You put it down."
"Because a guy with soot on his face told me to."
He pushed the key an inch closer.
"I'll say it," he said. "When we land. To whoever you want. In person. That she sent me down here to make your proof disappear."
"In front of people?"
