Chapter 15: What Brinley Kept

Darius moved to open the door, and I put my hand flat on his chest.

"Stand behind me," I said.

I opened it on the chain.

Brinley stood in the hallway light with a gym bag on her shoulder and no makeup on.

Her hair was tied back with a rubber band.

The glossy blonde woman from the gala was gone, and the girl who used to sleep on my bedroom floor was standing there in her place.

"Take the chain off," she said. "Please."

"Why are you here?"

"Cornelia's lawyer called me at noon. My condo is the Foundation's. My consulting retainer is closed. My car is leased to the Foundation." She laughed, and it came out wet. "The video of me slapping you has two million views. Cornelia says I'm a liability."

"You are."

"I know." She held up her phone. "I kept something. I've kept it for nine years. I want to trade it."

Behind me, Darius said, very quietly, "Let her in."

"Why?"

"Because I want to see what she thinks she's worth."

I took off the chain.

Brinley came in and stopped when she saw him standing by my couch.

"Darius," she said.

"Sit."

She sat on the edge of my kitchen chair with the bag between her feet.

She did not look at me.

"The night before I testified," Brinley said, "Cornelia picked me up in her car outside the church. She drove around the lake twice. I was so scared I felt sick, so I put my phone in my jacket pocket and I pressed record."

"Why?"

"I thought she might kill me." She said it simply. "She didn't. She paid me."

She set the phone on my table and pressed a button.
