Chapter 22: The Statement
The witness room on the third floor of the Dirksen Building had not changed in five years.
Same plastic chairs.
Same narrow table with the cigarette burns nobody was allowed to make anymore.
Same window onto an airshaft, and a clock above the door that ran four minutes fast.
Ben had asked for it.
He had sat in it since nine that morning.
Two floors up, a man he loved was giving a statement to the United States Attorney.
He had eaten nothing at all.
At two o'clock Greta had arrived with a bakery bag.
"Almond croissant," she had said. "From the Polish place on Archer. I told the guy to burn it."
"Did he?"
"He looked at me like I'd asked for a kidney."
Ben had eaten the whole thing in four bites and told her it was the worst he'd ever had.
She had hugged him so hard his ribs creaked.
Now it was ten past six, and the clock said quarter-past, and the door opened.
Dario came in alone.
His shoulder was freshly bandaged under a borrowed shirt.
His face was grey with eight hours of talking.
His eyes were red, and he had a roughness to his voice like a gate that hadn't been opened for years.
"Done," he said.
Ben stood up.
"They'll file the motion on Monday," Dario said. "The prosecutor says it won't take long. She said..." He stopped and swallowed. "She said your testimony was the most honest thing in the file. She said you never lied once, you were just *shown the wrong picture.*"
