Chapter 23: The Open Door
The curtains stayed open.
Ben noticed it as Dario laid him back on the grey sheets.
The last of the gold light was going out over Lake Michigan, and the whole glass wall stood wide behind them.
Thirty floors up there was nothing to hide from but gulls.
For five years he had been afraid of every window, and he turned his head on the pillow and let the lake look in.
"Is it too much?" Dario said.
He knelt over him, bare and broad-shouldered in the dusk, with both hands braced on either side of Ben's head.
"What?"
"The light."
"No." Ben reached up and slid his fingers into the short black hair. "I want to see you."
Dario kissed him.
It was slow and deep and unhurried, a kiss with no fight in it at all, the kind that had weight and time.
Ben's mouth opened under it, and he heard himself make a small sound.
They had never done this.
There had been a kitchen, a car, a cot, and a warehouse floor.
Every time it had been the rush of a man who might not live to see the morning.
They had never had a bed with nowhere to be.
Dario's mouth moved down his throat.
His hands, free and warm and certain, ran down Ben's ribs, over his stomach, around his hips, learning him in the half-light.
He kissed the scar on Ben's forearm.
He kissed the palm with the pale line across the heel.
"You've got a crease in your elbow where you carry the peel," he murmured. "I've been looking at it for two weeks."
"That's weird."
"Yes."
"Keep going."
He did.
He kissed the sharp bone of Ben's hip, then the inside of his thigh, and Ben's legs fell open, and he gasped.
