Chapter 14: The Carbon Copy

Nigel came down two steps and stopped at the bottom of the walk.

"Don't slam the door," he said. "Please. Give me one minute."

My father got out of the car and stood by the fender with his arms folded.

"One minute," I said. "He's timing you."

"I know." Nigel held out the envelope. "It's the carbon."

"The carbon of what?"

"The transfer. The notary made two copies the day I carried it over. One stayed in the vault, and he gave me the second one back for Dad's files." His throat moved. "I never gave it to Dad. I put it in a drawer and forgot it for six years."

I didn't take it.

"Why would you keep it?"

"Because I'd been told to carry a piece of paper and I didn't ask what was on it, and then I read it in the elevator." He stared at the envelope. "My uncle's name. I knew it was wrong. I put it away so I wouldn't have to know it."

"That's the opposite of keeping it."

"Yes," Nigel said. "It is."

My father took one step forward, and Nigel flinched.

"Let her read it, son," my father said.

I took the envelope, and it was lighter than I'd expected.

Inside were two sheets stapled at the corner.

The top one was the transfer, the same words I had photographed in the vault, with the same stamp and the same signature with the wrong loop on the G.

The second was a small yellow slip, a courier receipt, with a line at the bottom in blue ink.

Received for R. Pickering. G. Pickering.

The second G had been written by a twenty-three-year-old, and it was the right shape.
