Chapter 15: Seven Days

The Pickering Group board met on Monday at nine, on the top floor of the building next to the Harcourt.

I knew because Brooke's last text said so, and because I had stopped being polite about who told me things.

The lawyer's letter gave my father nine days to find two million dollars, and I had decided to spend the first of them on Russell.

I walked in at five past, with my father's old briefcase and my hair pinned up.

The receptionist stood, and I went past her.

The boardroom had a long glass table with six chairs.

Russell sat at the head, and three people sat along the sides, two men in their sixties and a woman older than both of them, with white hair and a cane hooked on the table's edge.

Costa was not there, and I was glad, and I noticed I was glad.

"Miss Coombs," Russell said. "This is a private session."

"Then I'm sorry to interrupt," I said. "I'll be quick."

"Security," Russell began.

"Let her stand," said the woman with the cane.

Her voice was dry and quiet, and the room did what it said.

"Madam chair," Russell tried.

"I sat on this board when your father still ran it, Russell. Miss Coombs, you have the floor until I take it back."

I set the briefcase on the glass.

"I'm here about two things," I said. "A recording, and a signature."

"The recording is the reason we are here," Russell said smoothly, and he touched his tablet. "I'd like the directors to see what I've had to deal with."

The screen on the wall lit.

It showed the elevator lobby again, and a woman in a dark dress pushing a man against a mirror.

Nobody in the room looked at me.

One of the older men cleared his throat and studied his pen.
