Chapter 21: The Back of the Card

Costa's POV

I watched her read the back of the card, and I did not move.

I stood at the end of the corridor with my brother's gray face between us, and I saw Keeva's mouth go still.

She did not look up.

She closed the folder, tucked it under her arm, and walked to the elevator.

Her father went after her.

Brooke touched her sleeve at the door, and Keeva shook her head without turning, and the doors slid shut on all three of them.

I had told her.

I had told her on the club steps.

It was different to watch her read the line in my own hand.

"Costa," the woman with the cane said behind me. "A word, please. You are now a shareholder with a thirty percent stake."

I followed her back into the boardroom.

The glass table was littered with photographs and torn paper.

The directors sat looking at me and waiting.

"The chair is vacant," she said. "We would like you to take it."

"No."

"Costa."

"I'll take my seat," I said. "I'll vote my shares. I'm not taking my brother's chair."

"The company needs a chair by Friday. Who will you put in it?"

"Anyone who hasn't forged a signature."

One of the older men almost smiled.

"There's the matter of the forgery," said the man with the pen. "Counsel will want to refer it."

"Russell's house, his accounts, his son's post here. A great deal falls with him."

I thought of the house in Brookline, and the dining room, and the woman who had said, Please don't make it worse.
