Chapter 22: When He Stopped Planning

Keeva's POV

I had spent two hours mending the card, because I needed something to do with my hands.

The paste had dried clear between the pieces, and the crease ran through the middle of my own laughing face.

I did not turn around when the bell rang.

"I'm not going to ask you to say anything," Costa said from the door. "I only wanted you to know where I was."

"Close it. You're letting the cold in."

He closed it.

I heard him cross the floor, and stop a few feet behind me, and wait.

I smoothed the last piece flat with the bone folder.

"I'm going to ask you one question," I said. "Not the one your brother wanted me to ask."

"Ask."

"When did you stop planning?"

He didn't answer right away.

I turned the stool then, and looked at him.

He stood with his coat open and his hands empty.

He looked as though he had walked the whole way from the boardroom.

"Not the second I took off the ring," I said. "You told me that on the steps, and I don't believe it was a second. I want the real minute."

"The elevator," Costa said.

"The kiss?"

"Before it." He drew a breath. "You said you were sober and furious and asking me. I had a plan for that bar. It was to sit near you, let you talk, and learn what Russell had told his son's bride about me. I wasn't going to touch you."

"And then?"

"And then you said, tell me you don't want to." His voice dropped.

"I had the whole plan still in my head. I looked at your face and I couldn't find a single line of it."
