Chapter 4: Stay Where I Can See You

Russell brought him to our table himself.

"Costa, meet my son's bride," he said. "Keeva Coombs."

Costa held out his hand.

"Congratulations, Keeva," he said.

His voice was level and polite, and it was the same voice that had said my name against my skin at three in the morning.

I took the hand.

It was warm and dry, and it let go on time.

"Thank you," I said. "Welcome home."

"I didn't think I'd be asked."

"You weren't," Russell said, smiling. "I decided it was time to put old things behind us."

Costa's face did not change at all.

He nodded at my father, and my father nodded back and kept holding his napkin.

Then Nigel slapped his uncle's back and started in on a story about a boat, and Costa answered in two short sentences, and for ten minutes the whole table talked over my head.

I could not eat.

I stared down at the centerpiece.

When the salads came, I leaned toward Nigel and said I needed air.

"Take your time," he said, not looking up.

The terrace doors were open at the end of the ballroom.

I walked out into the cold and put both hands on the stone railing.

Behind me, the door opened and closed.

I didn't turn around.

"You knew," I said.

"Knew what?"

"Who I was."

Costa came to stand beside me, with a careful foot of air between our arms.

"I found out when Russell said your name in the doorway," he said. "I didn't know until then. I'd have stopped you at the elevator if I had."
