Chapter 5: Let Her Finish

I took the microphone out of Nigel's hand.

He let me, because he thought it was a gift.

"Thank you all for coming," I said.

My voice carried farther than I expected.

"Nigel is going to say a few words about me, and I'd like to answer them first."

Somebody near the front laughed warmly.

Brooke, at table three, picked up her water glass.

"Last night, at about midnight, my fiancé called me by accident," I said. "He was busy. I stayed on the line."

Nigel's smile stayed on his face a second too long.

"Keeva," he said low. "What are you doing?"

I held up my phone and turned the volume all the way up.

I pressed play with the phone's speaker against the microphone.

The first thing the ballroom heard was the rustle of sheets.

Then Brooke's laugh, soft and breathless.

"Nigel, stop. What if Keeva finds out?"

"Keeva? She'd sleep through a fire," Nigel's voice said, tinny and clear. "She's the easiest person I've ever lied to."

Two hundred people stopped moving.

A fork hit a plate somewhere.

"Promise me it ends at the wedding," Brooke's voice whispered through the speakers. "I can't share you with her forever."

"It ends the day I get my hands on the Coombs lots. Two years, tops. Come here."
