Chapter 14: Soren's Nest
Soren Lunde had never in his life been good at waiting, so he built the nest while it was still dark.
He dragged the mattresses down three flights, one at a time: his own, Erik's narrow one, the spare from the attic, and Kenji's from the sewing room.
He laid them edge to edge across the floor of the sunroom.
It was the only room in the house with no door.
The arch was wide open to the kitchen.
The glass walls looked over the back yard and the long dark slope of the hill to the river.
He liked it.
He had always liked a room that couldn't be shut.
Leif came down with Kenji in his arms, wrapped in a quilt.
By then Soren had piled the pillows and dragged in the afghan their mother had crocheted.
He was standing in the middle of it all with his hands clenched at his sides.
"I built it for you," he said.
Kenji looked around.
At the glass, at the stacked pillows, at the open arch where the kitchen light fell in a long yellow bar.
"It's perfect," he said.
Soren's chest hurt.
He didn't know why it hurt, except that he had been waiting for someone to look at one of his things and say that.
Erik came in behind them in his pajamas and stood at the edge of the mattresses and said, "It's a rat's nest."
Then he sat down in the middle of it with his arms crossed and did not move for the rest of the night.
