Chapter 15: Quiet House
"The rule," Kenji said, "is that nobody makes a sound."
"That's not a rule," Soren said. "That's a death sentence."
It was Monday morning, ten past seven, and the house had emptied out around them.
Tilda's bus had left at six-forty, and Erik had a lab until noon.
The kitchen was warm and bright and smelled of coffee and toast.
Leif had a jobsite at eight, and he was supposed to be in his truck.
He was standing in the doorway to the pantry with his boots on and his lunch cooler in one hand.
"They land in nine days," Kenji went on. "Both of them. Two weeks in this house. Their rooms are directly under the attic, and the walls here are paper. So we practice."
"Practice what?" Leif asked.
"Being quiet."
"We're quiet."
"Leif." Kenji folded his arms. "Last night I heard you through two floors. I heard you say my name. I heard the headboard. I heard Soren laugh."
"Soren laughs at everything."
"I was happy," Soren said.
"Quiet," Kenji said. "That's the lesson. The pantry. Now."
The pantry was a narrow room off the kitchen, shelved floor to ceiling with jars and bags of rice and cans of tomatoes.
It had a door that closed.
Soren's face changed.
