Chapter 12: The Loft

"Morning, you two," Ray called down. "Up early for a couple who've got a wedding to rest for."

My heart tried to leave my chest, and my mouth did the work instead.

"Honeymoon budget," I said, and I held up the folder as I stood.

Ryan went rigid beside me.

"I'm a forensic accountant," I said. "Sam wanted me to look over his savings before he surprises Kat with a trip. We came out here so she wouldn't walk in on it."

"A honeymoon." Ray came down the bank with the thermos, grinning. "Where to?"

"Oaxaca," Ryan said, and I nearly kissed him for thinking of it. "Her abuela's village. I haven't told her."

"Well, I'll be." Ray put a hand on his shoulder. "That's a good husband. That's exactly what that girl needs."

He took the folder from me, flipped it open and looked at the first page.

I watched his eyes go down the slips and back up.

He did not stop long, but he did not stop short either, and I could not read his face at all.

"Neat handwriting," he said, and handed it back.

"Thank you."

"Tonight at six, rehearsal dinner. Don't be late." He tapped his shirt pocket, where the notebook lived. "I've got a surprise of my own."

He went back up the bank, whistling.

Neither of us moved until the truck door shut.

"Oaxaca," I said.

"It was the first place I thought of."

"You are a terrible liar."

"You're a very good one." He swallowed. "Thank you."

"I'm not done being angry with you."

"I know."

"A hundred and seventy thousand dollars, Ryan."

"I know."

I looked at his hands, scarred and sunburned, the hands that had saved my parents' house a quarter at a time.

All my anger was still there.

And so was everything else.

"I'm not waiting until Saturday," I said.
