Chapter 13: Good Faith

Kat read Ray's text standing at the stove, and she set down the spatula very carefully.

"Birth certificate," she said.

"It says Ryan Brewer," Ryan said from the doorway. "It says my father's name, too."

"I know what it says."

It was one in the afternoon, and Abuela was asleep down the hall.

The three of us were alone in the Salazar kitchen for the first time all week.

I had showered and changed my sweater.

I was fairly sure I still looked like a woman who had spent the morning on a desk.

Kat gave me one long look and decided not to mention it.

"Why would he ask for it?" I said. "A name change comes with a court order. The license is legal."

"The license is legal," Kat said. "It's the will that's the problem."

She pulled a folded sheet out of the drawer under the phone and flattened it on the table.

"Grandpa wrote that the ranch passes to me if I'm married on my thirtieth birthday."

She tapped the line.

"Then he added four more words. In good faith."

I read it twice.

"Who decides if it's in good faith?"

"The trustee," Ryan said quietly. "Until the trust ends, the trustee certifies it."

"Ray," I said.

"Ray." Kat sat down hard. "He has never said it out loud. He just keeps asking about the license and watching us at supper."

"Since when?"

"Since June. He's been building a case."

"On what?"

"On the waitress. On the loft folder. On the fact that nobody has seen us kiss."

Her voice cracked on the last word, and she laughed at herself.

"I should have hired a better husband."

"Thanks," Ryan said.

"You know what I mean."
