Chapter 28: An Ordway
The hall had been loud a minute ago.
Now it was quiet enough to hear the lanterns tick.
"The law is clear," Ozias said. "The Alpha's household is one family. A mating inside it is forbidden. The sentence is exile. I said I'd pass it here, and I keep my word."
He looked at Judd.
Judd didn't let go of my hand.
An old elder stood up by the stair, white-haired, leaning on a stick.
"The law's the law," he said. "It's kept this pack whole for a hundred years. You break it for your own son, Ozias, and every wolf here will know the law bends for Vardens."
A murmur of agreement.
A she-wolf by the windows called out, "She saved his life!"
"That's not the question," the elder said.
"It's the only question I care about," Ket said loudly.
Somebody laughed.
Somebody else shouted her down.
It went back and forth across the hall for ten minutes.
The law. The boy. The girl. The Vardens.
