Chapter 29: Courting
"Court me," I said. "We live together. You wear my socks."
"Then I'll move out."
The hall was still roaring around us.
I stared at him.
"You're going to move out," I said, "to court me."
"I'm going to do it right," Judd said. "I'm going to knock."
He moved out on Sunday.
He packed his duffel, kissed me at the top of my stair and drove back up the mountain to the room he'd been born in.
He left his mug on my shelf.
He'd finally bought a second one the week before the Gathering.
"So I have a reason to come back," he said.
He came back Monday at six with coffee in both of them.
He was still on the crew.
The heir of Black Mountain dug holes all winter at seventeen dollars an hour, and nobody on the crew let him forget it.
"Your Highness," the young guy said every morning. "Shovel's by the truck."
"Thank you, peasant," Judd said, and took the shovel.
The foreman tore up the work order on the north line in front of all of us.
He dropped the pieces in the yard trash barrel and said nothing about it at all.
