Chapter 4: The Notebook
At eight ten, Yajaira drank her coffee standing in the kitchen, her cell phone in one hand and her mug in the other.
“I’m traveling again this week,” she said without looking at me. “Caracas. A conference. I’ll be back Friday night.”
“Friday?”
“Yes. Why?”
“We were thinking of going to Morrocoy.”
“Who’s we?”
“Genesis and me. You said you wanted her to see the cabin.”
“Oh.” She frowned, as if she’d just remembered a piece of furniture. “You two go. I won’t make it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely.”
She left her mug in the sink.
She kissed my cheek, the same dry brush of her lips.
She picked up her suitcase.
She stopped at the door.
“Edgar.”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t leave the girl alone at night. She’s very impressionable.”
The door closed.
Genesis was sitting at the dining table with a plate of arepas, looking at me over her mug of hot chocolate.
Her hair was still damp.
“Very impressionable,” she repeated.
Then she giggled against the rim of her mug.
I choked on my coffee.
I drove her to the university at nine thirty.
We parked on the top level of the Health Sciences building, a concrete floor that was almost empty at that hour, with gray pillars and a heavy sun pouring in through the vents.
I turned off the engine.
She pulled a blue-covered notebook from her backpack.
“Read it,” she said.
“What is it?”
“My practice notebook.”
I opened it.
The first page read, in neat, rounded handwriting:
“PRACTICE WITH E. L. Start date: Tuesday.”
The following pages were handwritten, with underlining and arrows, like a lab notebook.
“Practice 1. Couch, living room. Manual contact over clothing. Duration: 4 min. Subject’s reaction: sustained erection, moan at 2 min 10 sec. My reaction: increased heart rate, wetness, orgasm from friction. Note: ask for more time.”
I read it twice.
I swallowed.
“Practice 2. Shower. Digital contact, penetration with two fingers. Duration: 6 min. Orgasm. Note: I want to see.”
Farther down, a row of boxes.
“Practice 3. Shower. Oral sex on the subject. Duration: 14 min (two rounds). Ejaculation 1: in mouth. Ejaculation 2: on chest. Subject’s rating: 20/20. My rating: 15.5. Note: watch your teeth.”
