Chapter 5: Rule Three
Ulises lived on the fourth floor of a building in Copilco, with no elevator and a green door that stuck.
I knocked at nine that night, still holding my phone with the video open.
He opened the door wearing a T-shirt and pajama pants, a wooden spoon in his hand.
"I saw it," he said. "Come in."
I stepped into a tiny apartment, with books even in the bathroom, a gray couch, and a kitchen where a pot of rice was simmering.
It smelled like garlic and fried onion.
My mouth watered, and not just because of the food.
"We need to talk to the department chair," he said, turning off the burner. "I'll go in tomorrow and say it was me. You're not in any of it."
"No."
"Anahí."
"No," I repeated. "You're not going to confess to anything on my behalf."
"You're my student. You're my responsibility."
"I'm a twenty-one-year-old woman who made a decision on a bus." I took off my jacket and left it on the couch. "I grabbed your wrist, remember? I told you to push. This isn't something you did to me. It's something we did."
He ran a hand over his face.
"If they kick you out of the university..."
"If they kick me out of the university, I'll go to another one. I already spent two years without it. I'm not going to die."
