Chapter 13: The Hearing

The grange hall was full by a quarter to noon.

Seventy wolves sat on folding chairs in rows, with the Council table at the front.

Nobody ate.

Nobody drank coffee.

I came in through the side door on my cane, with Roe a half step behind me.

My mother sat in the third row with her hands knotted in her lap.

Nils stood at the back wall with his arms crossed.

Frieda Tollefson sat at the Council table in her gray wool coat, with a silver pin on her lapel.

She nodded to me.

The old healer sat beside her and would not look up.

Pia sat in the second row, alone, with her coat folded on her knee.

A man I knew from the creamery read the clause out in a flat voice.

Then he said, "The Luna may speak."

I walked to the front by myself.

Roe did not follow.

He had told me he wouldn't, and he kept his word.

I turned and faced the rows, and I leaned on the cane, and I let them look.

"My name is Elke Halvorsen," I said. "Most of you changed my diapers or bought my mother's rolls."

A few people almost smiled.

"I have a disease called myositis. My immune system attacks my own muscles."

"Right now it is a quiet week. That is the best I get."

"My thighs are weak. My shoulders are weak. I get tired in a way sleep does not fix."
