Chapter 14: Carry Me

"What I need," I said, "is for you to take your shirt off and sit against the headboard."

Roe stood.

He pulled the flannel over his head and dropped it on the floor.

The firelight moved on his chest and the freckled slope of his shoulders.

He climbed onto the bed beside me and put his back to the headboard with his legs stretched out.

"Hands flat on the mattress," I said. "Don't touch me until I tell you."

"Yes, Luna."

He said it dry, but his eyes had gone dark.

I let myself look at him for a while.

For three days I had been a patient, and today I had been a speaker, a cause and a problem to a roomful of people.

In this bed I was only the one giving the orders.

"Why did you say that word like that?" I asked.

"Which word?"

"Luna."

"Because it's what you are."

"Say it again."

"Luna."

It went through me low and warm, and I knew then what I wanted.

I got my hands on his belt.

The buckle was cold and the leather was soft with age.

I undid it, and the button, and the zipper, and he lifted his hips so I could drag his jeans down to his knees.

He was hard already, pressed up against his belly through his shorts.
