Chapter 16: Kelsey at the Tower

Jonas's POV

The lobby called up at seven-ten.

"Mr. Arceneaux, there's a Miss Dunn at the desk. She's crying. She says you asked to see her."

I had not asked.

I stood at the window of my office and looked down at the street, where Jillian's car had not come back.

"Send her up," I said. "And leave the lobby camera running."

Kelsey Dunn came through my door in a cream coat and a fresh white bandage on her left ankle.

She limped three steps, saw there was no audience, and stopped limping.

"You're not surprised," she said.

"No."

"Good. It saves time."

She sat down in the chair across the desk without being asked and crossed her ankles.

"Jillian's at the hospital," she said. "She walked out on you at dawn. Did she say goodbye?"

"She said she was going to work."

"That's what women say when they're leaving." Kelsey smiled at me, small and sweet. "I'm sorry. I know you wanted more time."

I said nothing.

She leaned forward.

"She called you on a bench, Mr. Arceneaux. She had been left, and she wanted the biggest weapon in the city. You were it."

It was the sentence I had said to myself for three years, in her voice.

I let her see nothing.

"She'll stay until Brett is finished," Kelsey said. "Then she'll thank you politely and ask for the divorce. Women like her always do. They hate owing anyone."

"Is there something you came to ask me?"

"Yes." She sat back. "The file."

"What file?"

"The one your investigator spent a year on. The one that has Brett's car in it." She picked at the bandage. "I'll make you a trade. Burn it, and I keep the video in a drawer. Everyone goes on."

"A video of what?"

"You know of what."
