Chapter 17: Her Choice

Jillian's POV

Jonas stood behind his desk with the sun coming up behind him, and he did not move.

"Kelsey just left," I said. "I passed her in the lobby."

"She was here for twenty minutes."

"Did she say I was leaving?"

"Yes."

"Did you believe her?"

"For about one minute," he said. "She was good."

I laid the folder on his desk, between his hands.

"Brett told me everything in an ambulance bay," I said. "He told me she said *Drive.*"

Jonas closed his eyes.

"Diane told me the rest. She'll be at the signing."

"Jillian."

"Let me finish. I have been angry at you since last night, and I want to say it all while I'm still angry."

He opened his eyes and nodded.

"You kept this from me for two days," I said. "You looked at me across that table, and you let me think you'd been working."

"Yes."

"I would have wanted the choice, Jonas."

"I know."

"You wanted me to pick you first."

"Yes."

"That was selfish."

"Yes."

"It was also the kindest selfish thing anyone has ever done to me," I said, and my voice broke on it.

He stared at me.

"If you'd told me on the first night, I would have gone straight to Brett and torn him to pieces. And I'd have done it for the wrong reason. Not for you, and not for me. For the debt."

"I thought about it every hour."

"I know you did."

He pushed the folder back across the desk to me.

"It's yours," he said. "All of it. The paint, the invoice, the waitress. You decide whether the police get it on Monday, or Friday, or never."

"Never?"

"If you decide never, I'll keep my mouth shut. I will not say another word about it."

"Even though it nearly killed you."

"You're the one who stopped on that road. You get to decide what it was for."
