The comments under the video had already passed nine thousand.

I read forty of them standing in Jonas's kitchen in my ruined dress, and then Jonas took the phone out of my hand and set it face down on the counter.

"I can have it taken down within the hour," he said.

"No."

"Jillian."

"If it comes down, everyone will think it was true." I rubbed my bandaged palm with my thumb. "I want it up where people can see it. I want them to watch the next part."

"What is the next part?"

"I don't know yet."

He waited, because he was a man who knew how to wait.

"You asked me three hours ago why I called you," I said. "I'll tell you one thing, and it's not what you think."

"I'm listening."

"Six months ago Brett left me on a ridge in the rain. I told you that part in the car."

"You told me you walked back."

"It was four miles, and it was dark. When I got to the car park at eleven, his car was there, with the engine running."

I could still see the fogged windshield and the yellow glow of the dash.

"He was in the driver's seat with Kelsey asleep on his shoulder," I said. "They had takeout. They'd had dinner while I was out in the weather. He rolled the window down and he said, 'There you are. I was about to start worrying.'"

Jonas's face did not change.

His hand, resting on the counter, closed slowly.
