Chapter 6: Garage Camera

Brett turned around when he heard Jonas's voice, and I watched him decide not to be afraid.

"This is a private matter," he said. "My friend is a patient."

"She's a patient who filmed herself in a waiting room," Jonas said. "That's a different matter."

He did not raise his voice.

He looked past Brett at a man in a gray suit who was coming across the lobby fast, with his tie crooked.

"Mr. Arceneaux," said the hospital director. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were here."

"I'm here with my wife."

The word went through the waiting room.

Every head in the row of plastic chairs turned toward me, and then back to Kelsey, and then back to me.

The director blinked once at me, taking in the scrubs and the badge.

"Your wife works for us?"

"She does," Jonas said. "Someone has made a complaint about her, and I'd like it heard now, in this room."

"Of course. Of course. Ms. Dunn, is it?"

Kelsey pulled the blanket up to her chin.

"I don't want to make a scene," she said, in a thin little voice.

"I only want to be treated by someone who won't hurt me."

"Ms. Dunn says the ankle examination last night caused her harm," the director said carefully. "Jillian, I have to ask."

"May I ask the security office for something?" I said.

"What do you need?"

"The parking garage camera, from five this morning. Level two."

Kelsey went very still under the blanket.

The director sent a man running.

Four minutes later, the lobby television above her head, the one that usually played cooking shows, flickered and switched to a gray grid.
