Chapter 12: The Staff Room
"Suspended for what?" I said.
My head nurse pulled the envelope out of the guard's hand and read it aloud in the lobby.
"Harassment and threats against a private citizen at his place of business," she read. "Stalking. And an unverified claim that you took pills from the unit."
Behind her, a man from administration in a gray suit shifted his weight.
"The complaint came with a signed statement," he said. "We have to investigate."
"I've worked here six years," I said. "I've never lost a single milligram."
"I understand. Pending review, you can't enter."
The words hit me in the stomach.
I thought about Slade lifting two fingers from the steering wheel.
I thought about him saying, by Friday.
It was Tuesday.
"Give me five minutes," my head nurse said to the man in the suit. "Staff room. Both of you."
The staff room was a windowless box with a fridge, a microwave and a long table.
By the time I sat down, it had twenty people in it.
They had walked in from the unit in their scrubs, one by one, on their breaks.
Nurses, techs, an anesthesiologist, the unit clerk who never spoke to anyone.
The nurse from step-down stood against the fridge.
The tech who had filmed the cafeteria held her phone in both hands.
The man in the suit looked around at the crowd.
"This is an HR matter," he said.
"It's a staff matter," my head nurse said. "Play it."
"I emailed my Saturday cafeteria video to Administration at noon," the tech said. "Time-stamped, with sound."
"I've seen it," the man in the suit admitted. "She came to him. He never moved."
