Chapter 13: The Cake

Minnie shoved me into the cold room with a tray of sheet cakes and shut the door to a crack.

"Delaney just parked across the street," she said.

"What?"

"She booked a gala cake consultation online. Under her own name. I didn't make the appointment, she did."

"She picked your bakery?"

"She found it on a list of the best bakeries in Chicago," Minnie said. "I'm number four."

I stared at her.

"Stay quiet, stay behind the buttercream, and don't touch the door."

"What about my breath?"

"What about it?"

"It's thirty-four degrees in here."

"Hold it."

She closed the door to a thin gap and went out to the counter.

Through the crack I could see a slice of the shop, the display case, the register and a bell on the door.

The bell rang.

Delaney's heels came across the floor, fast and bright.

"Hi!" she said. "I'm Delaney. I have a ten-fifteen."

"Of course." Minnie's voice was warm and smooth. "Minnie. Come sit."

"This place is adorable. Honestly, I'm obsessed."

"Thank you."

"I need a cake for a very big night," Delaney said. "It's Merrick Realty's anniversary gala. Two hundred guests, a rooftop, a view of the river."

"And what do you want on it?"

"Three tiers. White, with gold leaf." She lowered her voice happily. "And a name on the top."

"Whose?"

"Mine and my guy's. Slade and Delaney. He says it's for a partnership announcement, but I know what it is." She giggled. "I'm not stupid. He told me to wear white."

I gripped the edge of a shelf so hard that the metal bit into my bandage.

Minnie's pencil scratched on her order pad.
