Chapter 14: No More Lies

By morning the bomb was gone, carried out of the garage by two of the Don's men who had not slept either.

Nico stood in his study with his back to the door, and I shut it behind me and turned the key.

"No more lies about the dreams," I said. "You agreed to that."

"I know what I agreed to."

"You looked me in the eye last night."

"Giulia."

"You lied, and I watched you do it."

He turned around.

He hadn't shaved, and his eyes were shadowed grey.

"Yes," he said.

That was all.

I had braced for an argument, and he walked straight through it.

"Say it," I said. "All of it, now."

He took the link out of his pocket and set it on the desk between us.

"I didn't lose my own," he said. "It was in a dish on my dresser, and one morning last spring it was gone."

"Gone."

"A week later Dario threw me this one at breakfast. He laughed. He said, don't lose this one."

"And you didn't ask yourself why?"

"I asked myself every day." His hand flattened on the wood. "I thought he was mocking me. I thought, my brother wants me to wear his name on my sleeve."

"And on the boat?"

"I stood there with the catalogue in my hand, and I still couldn't make it say anything."

He looked at the link.

"Then you said it was never Dario in the car. And I understood in one breath, the way you did."
