Chapter 15: The Wrong Day

Don Ettore listened to the whole thing standing at his study window, and he didn't turn around until Nico finished.

Nico had put the grey box on the desk.

It sat on the blotter.

"Dario wired this under my car," Nico said. "He meant it for me."

The Don's hand tightened on the curtain.

"I have eight men at the east house," he said. "Eight."

"He's walked past all of them for a month, Papa."

"Then I'll go over there tonight with my own hands."

"No," I said.

Both men looked at me.

I had never told Don Ettore no, and I felt it in my knees.

"Forgive me, Don Ettore. If you take your heir out of his bed at night on a stranger's word, the capos won't see a father protecting one son. They'll see you choosing a side in your own house."

"They'll see I punished a man who tried to kill my son."

"They'll see a box on a desk, and a girl who says she dreamed it."

His eyes narrowed.

"Nico believes my dreams. You may not, and the capos never will. They don't have to love Nico or me. They only have to see Dario do it."

The Don was silent for a long time.

"You want to let him try," he said.

"I want to let him try in front of them."

Nico's mouth moved.

I thought it was almost a smile.

"The photograph came from a window in this house," Nico said. "Someone here is feeding him. If we move the wedding, whoever it is will carry the news."
