Chapter 21: The Slap
My ears were still ringing when I felt Tobin move.
I put my hand flat on his chest without looking.
"Don't," I said.
"Leanne."
"She wants you to."
His whole body was vibrating under my palm.
He stayed where he was.
My cheek burned in the shape of four fingers.
Two hundred phones were pointed at us, and the big screen over the stage showed my face, and Darla's, and the red mark.
"You did this to my daughter!" Darla screamed.
"I did not."
"You stood up in my house and played that thing! You humiliated her in front of a whole family!"
"Your daughter got humiliated by the man she chose," I said. "I just brought her a ride."
"You are a vindictive little cake decorator."
"And you are on camera."
She looked up at the screen.
She saw herself, twenty feet tall, with her teeth bared and her pearl studs shining.
For a second her face did not know what to do.
"Turn that off," she said.
Nobody did.
She raised her hand again.
A heavy grip closed around her wrist.
