Chapter 22: The Real Wedding
Gran's backyard held thirty folding chairs, a plastic arch, and a flamingo in a tuxedo.
"It's a tuxedo T-shirt," Gran said. "Don't look at it too hard."
I stood at the back door in Gran's green dress with my mother's veil pinned to my ponytail.
It was a Sunday afternoon, the week after the lot, and the whole yard smelled like barbecue.
Tobin's site crew had set up the chairs and the folding table and a speaker the size of a toaster.
Six of them sat in the front row in clean work shirts, looking terrified of the folding chairs.
The head pastry chef sat behind them in a black dress, scowling at the cake.
I had made it myself in her kitchen between shifts, one tier, vanilla, with lemon curd and a ring of sugar lemons on top.
"It's crooked," she told me earlier.
"It's meant to be."
"Then it's perfect," she'd said, and walked away so I couldn't see her face.
Trista sat in the second row with a hand on her stomach.
Gran had put her in an apron the day she moved in and taught her to knit a lopsided baby hat.
