Colin sat.

He did not choose to; his knees did it, and he dropped onto a bench in the corridor outside the boardroom.

The guards let go of his arms.

"You will go home," Honoria said from her chair, through the open door.

"On Monday at nine you will return with your counsel."

"You will clear your desk in front of the floor, as the board directs."

"Mr. Shaw will not be present. He has recused himself, and I find I admire it."

Down the corridor, Colin put his face in his hands.

I did not feel what I had thought I would feel.

I felt tired, and I felt Truman's coat sleeve against my shoulder, and I did not lean.

On Monday morning, the fourteenth floor stood up.

Nobody had told them to.

By ten to nine, every analyst from Forecasting was on their feet around the pod.

So were people from Contracts, and Accounts Receivable, and the two women who had whispered "gold digger" in the atrium.

Joyce stood at my elbow with her binder under her arm.

"He asked me what time," she said, very low, "and I told him."

"Who?"
