Chapter 22: Merit
The panel met at eight on Tuesday, December first, in the boardroom, with the blinds up this time.
The river was the color of pewter, and a barge moved on it very slowly.
Truman and I sat on one side of the table, a hand's width apart.
I had not put my hand in his, and he had not asked.
Honoria sat in the center, with a director on either side, and the cane lay in front of her.
She had no notes.
"The trustee's challenge is that this marriage is not what it says it is," she said. "The panel has considered it."
"I have sat at tables for forty years, and I know a performance when I see one. This was not one."
"We have also watched a man volunteer, to a hearing that could have cost him everything, the worst minute of his life."
"He did not have to. A denial would have won him his votes."
She turned her head, and for a moment her eyes rested on her son.
"A sham marriage lies to protect itself," she said. "These two have told each other, and this room, every inconvenient thing they had."
